I am based in Indian Trail, which puts me right in the middle of Union County. I have shot weddings and events across this area for years, and I want to give you something that most venue guides do not — an honest photographer's perspective on what to actually expect when you show up with 150 guests, a wedding party, and one chance to get it right.

This is not a sponsored list. These are observations from someone who has worked these spaces.

Why Union County Is Having a Moment

If you have been watching the Charlotte suburb market, you already know that Union County is growing fast. Waxhaw, Weddington, Waxhaw, Matthews, Monroe — these communities have exploded over the last decade. And with that growth has come a real demand for wedding venues that are not inside the city.

Couples are moving out here. They are buying homes out here. And increasingly, they want to get married out here too — close to where they actually live, with the space and character that Charlotte's urban venues cannot offer.

The outdoor venue market in Union County is genuinely beautiful. Rolling land, mature trees, natural light that is completely different from what you get in a ballroom or event center. As a photographer, I will take a Union County outdoor property over a city ballroom almost every time — and I will tell you exactly why as we go.

What to Look for in a Union County Venue

Before I get into specifics, here are the things I look for as a photographer when I am visiting a venue:

Natural light. How does the space look in the afternoon? Is there open sky for ceremony coverage, or are you surrounded by deep shade that will make your photos look flat? The best outdoor venues have a mix — open ceremony space with shaded areas for portraits.

Background variety. A great venue gives you multiple distinct backdrops within a short walk. Open fields, tree lines, architectural elements, water features. The more variety in the environment, the more variety in your photos.

The golden hour window. Where does the sun set relative to your ceremony and reception space? A venue with a western-facing open horizon gives you magic light in the hour before sunset. That window is where some of the best wedding portraits ever taken happen.

Parking and logistics. This is not glamorous, but it matters. A venue that handles your guests' arrival smoothly means the timeline stays intact, which means you get more time for portraits.

Outdoor Farm and Barn Venues

Union County has a number of barn and farm properties that have become popular wedding destinations, and for good reason. The land is beautiful, the character is real, and the scale works for everything from an intimate 50-person ceremony to a full 200-person reception.

As a photographer, I love these spaces. The weathered wood, the open fields, the natural textures — it all gives you something to work with that a hotel ballroom simply cannot. The light in open farm country is also exceptional, especially in the late afternoon.

What to know: barn venues vary a lot in how polished the experience is. Some are full-service operations with on-site coordinators and catering kitchens. Others are more DIY, which can be wonderful for the right couple but requires more planning and vendor coordination. Make sure you know which type you are dealing with before you book.

Outdoor Garden and Estate Venues

There are also a handful of more refined outdoor properties in the Union County area — estate-style venues with manicured grounds, gardens, and architectural elements that photograph beautifully.

These properties tend to offer a more formal aesthetic. If you are going for a classic or romantic look, this is your lane. The groomed hedgerows, stone paths, and garden structures give you the kind of composed portraits that fill album spreads.

The tradeoff is that they can feel less organic than a farm property. But for the right couple and the right aesthetic, they are stunning.

Event Centers and Indoor Venues

Union County also has a range of dedicated event and wedding centers — the kind of venue that handles everything under one roof, which simplifies the vendor coordination significantly.

MeadowView Events in Cherryville (a bit further out but worth mentioning given my couples there) is one example of a venue built specifically for weddings with a full team on-site. These venues tend to be easier to manage logistically, which is a real advantage if you are not working with a wedding planner.

As a photographer, indoor venues require more attention to lighting. I always visit beforehand if I have not shot there, and I come prepared with the right equipment to make any indoor space look its best.

The Thing No One Tells You

Here is the honest part: the venue is not the most important decision you will make.

I have photographed beautiful weddings at modest venues and mediocre weddings at stunning properties. What makes the difference is almost always the couple, the energy in the room, and the team of vendors around them.

A great photographer can make almost any space look incredible. An experienced coordinator can keep any timeline running smoothly. The venue is the container — but what goes inside it is what you will remember.

That said — if you are in Union County or anywhere in the Charlotte suburbs and you are looking for venue recommendations specific to your vision, feel free to reach out. I am happy to point you in a direction based on what you are going for.
