When couples see "drone" listed in a wedding package, one of two things happens. Either their eyes light up because they have seen aerial wedding footage and they want that for themselves — or they kind of shrug because they are not sure what it actually adds.
I want to talk to both groups, because the answer is more interesting than you might think.
What Drone Coverage Actually Is
Drone photography and videography on a wedding day means a licensed pilot — in our case, that is part of our full team package — operating a camera drone at your venue to capture footage and stills that a photographer on the ground simply cannot get.
We are talking about wide establishing shots of your venue. Aerial footage of your ceremony space before guests arrive. A rising shot of you and your partner during golden hour that pulls back to reveal the full landscape behind you. The kind of frame that makes a video feel like a film.
You have seen it in wedding highlight reels that make you stop scrolling. That footage came from a drone.
Why We Made It Part of the Package
A lot of photographers offer drone as an expensive add-on. We include it in our top full-team packages for a reason.
Drone footage changes the feel of an entire wedding film. Without it, you have beautiful ground-level coverage. With it, you have something cinematic — something that gives your story scale, context, and a visual language that most wedding videos do not have.
We decided early on that if we were going to offer a premium wedding experience, the aerial element had to be part of that. Not an upsell. Not a surprise charge. Part of the deal.
What Venues Work Best for Drone Coverage
Not every venue is drone-friendly, and that is worth understanding before you book.
Outdoor venues are ideal. Barn venues, farm properties, lake venues, mountain settings — these are where drone footage is most powerful and where you are least likely to run into restrictions. Venues in the Charlotte area like outdoor barn and farm properties in Union County, the Lake Norman area, and venues out toward the foothills have great potential for aerial coverage.
Urban venues have more variables. Rooftop venues, venues near airports, or venues in dense downtown areas may have restrictions — either from the venue itself or from FAA airspace rules. We always check this in advance so there are no surprises on your day.
Weather matters. A drone cannot fly safely in strong winds or rain. We monitor conditions and always have a contingency plan if the weather does not cooperate.
What the Footage Is Used For
Drone content shows up in a few places in your final deliverables:
The most powerful use is in your wedding highlight film. A well-placed aerial shot in the opening or closing of a wedding film creates an emotional impact that is hard to replicate any other way. When you watch your video back in five years, that is the shot that is going to hit different.
We also pull stills from drone footage in some cases — wide shots of the venue, overhead ceremony shots, landscape frames that become wall art or album spreads.
A Note on Safety and Licensing
This matters and not everyone talks about it. Operating a drone commercially requires FAA Part 107 certification. Anyone offering drone coverage at your wedding should be able to show you that certification.
We take this seriously. We fly responsibly, we check airspace, and we operate with the kind of intentionality that keeps your venue happy and your guests safe.
