When a restaurant opens its doors for the first time, the images it puts into the world set the expectation before a single guest walks in. For Sonrisa, a new Latin American concept tucked into Brevard Court in Uptown Charlotte, we had one opportunity to make that first impression impossible to scroll past.
The Restaurant
Sonrisa, Spanish for smile, is a Latin American restaurant at 137 Brevard Court in Uptown Charlotte. The menu travels across Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, and the Caribbean. Dishes that are bold, generous, and built to be shared. A full bar leaning into tequila, mezcal, and rum cocktails. Two floors of warm, inviting space where the music is good and nobody feels rushed.
Since opening, Sonrisa has built a 4.8 star rating on Google with guest after guest describing the same thing: the food, the atmosphere, and the staff all delivering at the same level. The images needed to say that before the reviews could.
What They Needed
The team came to us ahead of their grand opening with a clear direction. Food that felt real and abundant. A space that felt warm and lived-in. Cocktails that stopped people mid-scroll. And a visual library broad enough to power a website, a Google Business profile, an Instagram grid, and printed menus all at once.
The brand palette, teal, gold, and burnt orange, was already strong. The interior gave us a lot to work with: an ornate pressed-tin copper ceiling, teal arched alcoves, colorful woven pendant lamps, exposed brick, and a long booth hallway with a glowing yellow-framed window at the end. Our job was to find the shots that made all of it feel inevitable.
Pre-Shoot Scouting
We visited the space twice before shoot day to map the light, identify hero locations, and solve for technical challenges before they came up during service.
Moodboard Alignment
We built the full shot list around the brand moodboard so there were no surprises when the gallery was delivered.
8-Hour Shoot Day
We worked from setup through dinner service, capturing everything from empty architecture to plated hero dishes to the energy of a full dining room.
Follow-Up Session
We returned for a focused second session to capture clean dining room portraits and bar drink shots in a controlled environment without service pressure.
What We Delivered
120 final edited images organized into seven categories the web and social team could put to work immediately: Hero, Food, Bar and Drinks, Interior, Exterior, Lifestyle and Service Energy, and a personal family section for the owners.
We also pulled a curated website subset ahead of the full gallery so Sonrisa's team could begin building the site while we finished post-production. The full gallery was delivered before they needed it.
Those images are now live across their website, Instagram, and Google Business profile. If the guest reviews are any indication, they are doing exactly what brand photography is supposed to do.
What Guests Are Saying
Since opening, the reviews have been consistent. The food, the atmosphere, and the experience are all landing the way the brand promised. These are the words real guests used. The images you commission either earn that trust before someone walks in, or they cost you the reservation entirely.

"We hired Levar to shoot photos for Sonrisa, our restaurant on Brevard Court, and the experience was fantastic from start to finish. He has a great eye. The food and space photography came out vibrant and true to our brand, and he really captured the feel we were going for. On top of the quality, he was professional and easy to work with throughout, communicative and flexible with our schedule. We've used the photos across our website and social media and get compliments on them constantly. Highly recommend if you need a photographer who delivers both great work and a smooth process."

Why Brand Photography Is Not Optional at Launch
Charlotte's independent restaurant scene is as competitive as it has ever been. Uptown alone has seen a wave of new concepts in the last two years, and every single one of them is competing for the same first impression on Instagram, Google, and their own website.
Most diners in Charlotte research a restaurant before they ever walk in the door. If the images they find do not match the experience being promised, they move on. Professional food and restaurant photography is not a marketing expense. It is the opening night.
Sonrisa understood that from day one. The images were ready before the doors opened, which meant the digital presence was working before the first guest sat down.
Working With Independent Restaurants in Charlotte
Levar Hage Photography works specifically with independent restaurants and hospitality brands. Not a generalist studio that shoots restaurants on the side. Hospitality is all we do. That means we understand service windows, kitchen timing, how to style a plate without slowing down the line, and how to move through a dining room without disrupting the experience your guests are paying for.
If you are looking for a food photographer in Charlotte, NC or a restaurant photographer in the Charlotte area, the difference between working with someone who understands hospitality from the inside and someone who does not shows up in every single image. We also offer food videography and hospitality photography for restaurants across Charlotte, Uptown, South End, NoDa, Indian Trail, Concord, and the surrounding region.
