“It was like the whole world stopped for a moment.”

Markeisha

That’s how Markeisha remembers the night Oscar proposed in the Japanese Garden at SAVÚ in Uptown Charlotte.

Their family and friends, some of whom traveled from out of town, were already seated. The SAVÚ team had a “Will You Marry Me?” sign, roses, and sparklers waiting. And I was at a table six to eight feet away, just another guest enjoying dinner.

She never saw me. Minutes later, Oscar was on one knee, and Markeisha said yes.

Their Story

How Oscar and Markeisha Met

Their story began on November 16, 2024, with a simple hello.

“I remember walking up to her, and our eyes locked. We exchanged names, and she flashed this beautiful smile that immediately caught my attention. Little did I know that simple introduction would turn into something so meaningful.”

Oscar

As they got to know each other, the connection only grew. Somewhere along the way, Oscar knew Markeisha was the person he wanted to build a future with.

The Venue

Why Oscar Chose the Japanese Garden at SAVÚ

Oscar knew exactly what he wanted for this moment, and the Japanese Garden at SAVÚ checked every box.

“I wanted somewhere beautiful, intimate, and romantic where I could create a moment she would always remember. The Japanese garden at SAVÚ provided that perfect setting. Looking back, everything worked out exactly how it was supposed to.”

Oscar

From behind the camera, I could see why. The space is dark and intimate, with a view out over the city. It’s the kind of setting that makes a moment feel like it belongs only to the two of you.

The SAVÚ staff made it just as memorable. They were warm and attentive with Oscar’s guests as everyone got into place, and just as helpful to me while I prepped. Assistant General Manager John Baylow kept me updated as we waited for the couple to arrive, all while taking care of every guest in the room. When I needed to move a couple of chairs for the best angle, the team made it easy.

A Note to the SAVÚ Team

John, thank you for keeping me in the loop all night. You and your team pulled it all off without taking anything away from the other diners’ night, and everyone on staff was genuinely invested in the proposal going perfectly. Even the guests at nearby tables got caught up in the excitement.

The care didn’t stop at the door. Your security team gave us the red carpet out front for portraits, and we gathered the whole group in the courtyard for family photos. You went out of your way for us when you didn’t have to. As the photographer trusted with one of the biggest moments of this couple’s life, I can’t thank you enough.

Oscar’s videographer, @elysiium.editz, was a true pleasure to work with. We moved as a team all night, giving each other room so we both captured the moments Oscar and Markeisha needed, and that was the whole goal. Her work is amazing, and I’d work side by side with her again anytime.

The Proposal

The Moment She Said Yes

Oscar and I planned a simple cue: when he pointed to his watch, I knew he was about to kneel. I arrived early to scout the room, chose a spot where Markeisha would face the light, and stayed out of sight so nothing gave the surprise away.

Then it happened. Here’s how Markeisha remembers it:

“Honestly, I thought this was something that would never happen. It was like the whole world stopped for a moment, and all I could think was, ‘Wow, this is really happening! We’re actually embarking on this new journey together.’ I was overwhelmed with happiness and excitement. It was such an incredible feeling that I couldn’t stop shaking. It was a moment I’ll never forget.”

Markeisha

My favorite frame of the night is the second she read the sign. Before Oscar said a word, the shock on her face said everything.

SAVÚ’s lighting is low and intimate, and that’s a big part of its charm. I chose not to use flash inside so I wouldn’t interrupt anyone else’s dinner, and there was no wall or ceiling close enough to bounce light. So I leaned on experience, let a little grain into the images, and kept every reaction real. Outside, with more room to work, the flash came out for the big group photos.

After the yes came the hugs, the ring, the sparklers, and portraits of the two of them with the people they love most.

With Gratitude

The People Behind the Night

A surprise like this takes a team. Oscar wanted to thank the people who made it happen:

  • Family and friends, many of whom traveled from out of town to be there.
  • Markeisha’s sister, who helped Oscar coordinate everything and kept the secret.
  • The team at SAVÚ, who set up the “Will You Marry Me?” sign and sparklers, took care of every detail, and created a beautiful atmosphere in the Japanese Garden.

A Photographer’s Tips for Planning a Proposal in Charlotte

Here’s what I plan for on every proposal, and what you can use for yours:

  1. Hire a vetted, experienced pro.Reactions happen once. In a dark, intimate space, an inexperienced photographer can get stuck and miss the moment entirely. Ask to see full galleries from low-light events, not just highlight shots.
  2. Book as early as you can.Plans can change, but locking in a photographer who understands the assignment is key. Popular photographers book months, sometimes a year or two, out.
  3. Think beyond Saturday.During wedding season, most great photographers spend their weekends shooting 9 to 10 hour wedding days. A weeknight, a Sunday evening, or sometimes a Friday gives you more options.
  4. Time it for sunset into dark.Proposing as the sun goes down gives you a mix of natural light and evening glow, depending on your setting.
  5. Scout the spot early.I arrive before the couple to choose exactly where it happens, so her face catches the best light and the background stays clean.
  6. Let your photographer blend in.At SAVÚ, I sat at a table six to eight feet away like a regular guest. Close enough for every expression, invisible enough to keep the surprise.
  7. Agree on a cue.A small signal, like Oscar pointing to his watch, tells your photographer the moment is coming.
  8. Angle the knee.Kneel slightly turned toward the camera, so the ring and her reaction both land in the frame.
  9. Place your people.Family and friends should stand behind or beside the photographer, phones held low, so they can see her face and stay out of the shot.
  10. Respect the room.In a restaurant, skip the flash during the proposal so you don’t disrupt other guests or tip her off. A skilled photographer can work with the available light.
  11. Plan the after. The yes lasts a few seconds. Leave time for portraits and family photos while everyone is still glowing.
In His Words

Oscar’s Advice for Planning a Proposal in Charlotte

I asked Oscar what he’d tell someone getting ready to pop the question. His answer is worth sharing in full:

“My biggest advice would be to plan ahead, but remain flexible because things don’t always go according to plan. Surround yourself with people who genuinely want to help make the moment special, and invest in a good photographer. The proposal itself may only last a few minutes, but those pictures will last a lifetime.

Most importantly, make the moment personal. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or perfect. It just needs to be meaningful to the two of you.”
